Heart throb actor John Lloyd Cruz apparently would love to attend a gay marriage in the Philippines someday – and he is not even afraid to admit it.
In an interview with TEAM Magazine for its third issue, Cruz, best known for his role as Popoy in “One More Chance” and the sequel “A Second Chance,” said one advocacy that he is not afraid to say with pride – he supports gay marriage in the Philippines.
“Simple lang ako sa buhay eh. Ako, ang ultimate goal ko in life is mabuhay ng malaya. If you want to ask me whether I am against it or not, very clear na okay ako doon. Hindi ako against doon,” Cruz said when asked how he feels about gay marriage.
Cruz, who has established himself as the leading man who is sensible and is not afraid to cry, said he is not even afraid his support for gay marriage would ruin his career.
He said he could speak his mind now, especially at a time when he is more knowledgeable about the rights of the LGBT community.
“Siguro lagpas na ako sa fear na yun. Back then, hindi pa naman ako ganito ka-knowledgeable about the issue. So why open you mouth when hindi ka pa naman fully-aware or if you have not fully understood kung ano ang nasa harap mo,” Cruz said.
“So ngayon, I’m 32, and pag natatanong ako about it, especially in the past three years, I’m more candid. Kasi yun nga eh, dapat walang basagan ng trip, diba?” he added.
Cruz said he would love to see two men or women get married in the Philippines.
“Hindi pa ako na-invite. I would love to go and see one. Kasi sobrang akong ano eh… pag uma-attend ako ng wedding, ako ‘yung unang umiiyak eh. Ako, sobra akong interested doon sa mararamdaman ko when I see two men getting hitched,” Cruz said.
Cruz said he wonders if he would get as emotional in seeing two gay people marry as in seeing straight couples. He admitted that he even cried watching the film “Brokeback Mountain,” the 2005 film by Oscars-winning director Ang Lee which featured the romance between Jack Glyenhall and the late Heath Ledger.
“Okay, will it have the same effect, emotion-wise? Pero for sure… di nga ako makatigil ng iyak sa Brokeback (Mountain) eh,” Cruz said.
Cruz himself starred in a gay role in the 2009 film “In My Life,” which cast him in a romantic tandem with fellow actor Luiz Manzano.
