Oblation Run hits Aquino admin ‘huwad na daan’

The Oblation Run of the Alpha Phi Omega (APO) fraternity chapter in the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman held its annual naked run on Monday in a statement of criticism against President Benigno Aquino III’s reform agenda.

Fraternity members ran butt-naked on Dec. 14 at the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy or Palma Hall. The event was dubbed “Hubad na Daan o huwad na daan” (naked path or fake path) to mock the administration’s “Tuwid na Daan” (straight path) agenda.

The fraternity advocated for transparency in government, as well as scored the administration’s reform agenda.

Opposition member Vice President Jejomar Binay is a member or “brod” of the fraternity. Binay is indicted for graft by the Ombudsman for the alleged overprice and rigging of the Makati City Hall Building II when he was mayor. Binay has said the administration is behind the “demolition by perception” to derail his presidential bid in 2016.

The tradition of the so-called “Dance of the Brave” is rooted in the fraternity’s history of political defiance during the martial rule of dictator Ferdinand Marcos. In 1977, two APO members streaked around the UP Diliman campus to protest the state ban of Robert Ylagan’s film “Hubad na Bayani,” which tackled the massive human rights violations at the time among workers.

The fraternity named their run after “The Oblation,” a statue sculpted by National Artist Guillermo Tolentino of a naked man offering himself to the nation. The Oblation is also the state university’s symbol.

On Dec. 4, the APO fraternity chapter in UP Manila also held its naked run in condemnation  of the spate of killings on “Lumads” or indigenous peoples in Mindanao amid heavy militarization.

The theme of the run is “Gold and Greed: UP Runs Against Lumad Killings and Displacement.”

Meanwhile, the APO chapter in UP Los Baños held its run on Dec. 1 urging Filipinos to go out and vote in the 2016 elections.

Some netizens took to Twitter to post pictures of APO fraternity members in UP Manila who were actually in good shape. (The photos below are definitely NSFW)
