Vice President bet and Congresswoman Leni Robredo said she is torn between being a Catholic and a public official when it comes to legalizing same-sex marriage in the Philippines.

In an interview with Esquire Philippines for its November 2015 issue, the Camarines Sur congresswoman and vice presidential candidate of the Liberal Party said same-sex marriage should be legalized in the Philippines despite pressure from the Catholic Church.

She defined the two sets of moral and legal standards that the church and state should protect – the church on the “morals and values of the flock,” while the government on the rights of its citizens, including the right to marry regardless of gender.

“As a Catholic, I don’t think I’d go for it, pero (but) I think government should  legalize it. Kasi (Because) it’s the obligation of government to make sure that rights should be universal regardless of religion, sex, and gender,” Robredo said when asked if she would support same-sex marriage.

Halimbawa (For example), as a Catholic, dapat obligasyon ng simbahan namin (it should be the obligation of the church) to take care of the morals and values of the flock. Pero ang gobyerno dapat (But the government) assures that rights should be protected, and that includes getting married to a person of the same sex,” she added.

The Catholic Church in the Philippines has vehemently opposed same-sex marriage, saying it destroys the essence of a family between man and woman and that it is a “sin to chastity.”

Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) President, Archbishop Socrates Villegas, urged Filipinos not to tolerate the legalization of rights for homosexual couples which is becoming the trend in other countries.

He made the reaction after the Supreme Court of the United States legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states.

Robredo made the statement of her support for same-sex marriage in the Esquire interview by writer-director Antoinette Jadaone, who wrote and directed the hit independent romantic-comedy film “That Thing Called Tadhana.”

Robredo earned praise on social media for her stance on the issue. In a Facebook post, netizen Isaac Saguit said he witnessed Robredo express the same position on same-sex marriage during her visit to the College of Law, University of Cebu-Banilad Campus on Dec. 9.

Robredo supposedly told the students that everyone has the right to marry the person he or she loves, regardless of gender.

Robredo also supposedly said government should not cater to one religion.

“When asked about same-sex marriage, Leni Robredo, without fear and without thinking twice, told Cebuanos in UC that everyone should be able to choose who they wish to love. She reminded everyone that human rights is universal and that everyone should enjoy the same rights everyone else is enjoying,” Saguit wrote in the viral post.

“She also pointed out that while we should respect religious beliefs and the right to religion, we should also respect the fact that the state does not and should not cater only to one religious group,” Saguit added.

Leni Robredo is the widow of former Interior Sec. Jesse Robredo, who died in a helicopter crash in 2012.

Robredo in 2013 ran and won the congressional district in Camarines Sur buoyed by the public sentiment for her husband, who before his death espoused the modest “tsinelas” (slippers) leadership when he was Naga city mayor.

The neophyte congresswoman whipped the Villafuerte political dynasty, which has ruled the district for at least 40 years.

Robredo earlier was hesitant to take on the vice presidential candidacy because of her lack of experience in politics. But she said she accepted the offer of Liberal Party standard bearer Mar Roxas because she knows her late husband Jesse would have agreed to it.

  1. Our constitution is to hold sancitity of family. Man and woman created to procreate. Union of homosexuals will no procreate and will never be a family. Borned lgbt have choice to be happy with union with same sex that is their inherent right from discreetly now they do it openly. Same sex marriage cannot be given the sanctity of marriage for the union of man and woman to procreate.

I support the position of Manny Pacquiao on the subject. Remember Sodom and Gomorrah

    • 1. If procreation is the essence of marriage, why allow barren or sterile individuals from entering into marital relations? These heterosexual individuals, when proven to be incapable of reproducing, should be prohibited from marrying- if we are to follow your logic.

With regard to the issue of Sodom ang Gomorrah, keep in mind that they are found in the Old Testament. Principles and teachings in the OT are not anymore followed. Otherwise, we would still be sacrificing goats at the altar or persecuting women who engage or who has engaged in pre-marital sex.

  4. She has entered politics. She is now compromising unless she is not clear on her Highest authority’s teachings. Marriage, this is not just being soul mates. There’s a physical union involve. If this is not the case to what they refer to when they say “same sex-marriage”, they should make it clear. I have many friends who are gays and they support happy companionship. Not marriage.

  5. does our constitution said that “Man and woman created to procreate”? you are trying to co-relate sanctity of family to procreation iN order to support your mis-guided and mis-leading dogma… procreation is NOT the sole purpose of marriage, much less of love…

those who want same sex marriage do not need the religious sanctity of marriage your are saying.. who the hell cares about your dogmatic sanctity… what same sex couples wanted are understanding, respect, and most of all recognition of their rights as person and as human being.. NOTHING ELSE..

  7. Just look back at history. Every society that has embarked on making same sex “marriage” has disintegrated – you need children and to raise them properly to have a strong future generation. If you don’t invest and make sacrifices for your future, your family name will disappear from the face of this earth. Here is another example of Filipinos trying to be “hip” like the stupid Americans. You are a Filipino, you have values. Don’t throw them into the toilet with the idiots from USA.

  8. Can we just think this through, the separation of church and state entails that canon law should be separated from civil law. Right now, the line dividing these two oceans of thought is just a fine line, but still can be clearly understood. I don’t think that any religion would recognize same sex marriages it is simply not possible in accordance with the bible (perhaps every bible), but civil law recognizes a different set of principles to which freedom of choice is paramount, this defines the difference, the church or whatever church will always recognize the laws as laid down by the bible, but civil law tends to take stock of the people’s will. Let us pretend for a moment that the issue is not a religious matter (else it would never pass muster) but rather a civil matter to which freedom of choice is the over riding principle, then perhaps it is possible. But let me offer a third choice, legally I mean, which is the recognition of a third gender not based on physical attributes but on sexual preferences. Just to be clear, a legislated law wherein every application form in this country would put down a third choice, and instead of just M or F there would be a third choice, perhaps G. Then there would be no need for a same sex law right? I am not gay, I am happily married and a Catholic by birth and choice, but the matter in question is not purely a religious issue, for religions and beliefs vary across the world. I may not like it but the reality of it is not disputable, a lot of us may not like it, but then again condemnation and intolerance is definitely not God’s way.

Will not the Government check the moral ethics and ask the majority + the history to help them validate it. This is the very reason why moral standard was being corrupted by the very person who’s main motive is as corrupt and selfish in nature. Do you think Lenny is different from the rest?

  10. Homosexuality as a mental disorder was never been proven otherwise. It was just the LGBT community that pressured the American Psychiatric Association to take it off the list that is why it is not considered a mental disorder anymore not because of some sort of scientific research or break though. They say animals can be homosexual, that is true, but animals can also have mental disorders.
